The arrival of March in St. Louis carries a specific kind of energy. The gray hues of winter begin to fade; the air shifts toward a refreshing crispness, and the riverfront starts to buzz with anticipation. On the first Thursday in March, we officially welcome a new season as the Riverboats at the Gateway Arch return to the water.

If you are looking for a way to shake off the winter chill and reconnect with the spirit of St. Louis, there is no better vantage point than the deck of a paddlewheel boat. Here are five reasons why a cruise on the Mississippi River is the essential way to start your spring.

Trade the sidewalk for the original highway

St. Louis was not just built near the river; it was defined by it. Founded as a fur-trading post, the city grew into a powerhouse because of its position on these waters. When you step onto our replica riverboat, you are doing more than taking a tour. You are experiencing the city the way early settlers and explorers did centuries ago. Feeling the gentle pull of the current and watching the shoreline drift by provides a tangible connection to over 200 years of American history that you simply cannot get from a car or a sidewalk.

Bring the whole crew to escape on the river

Spring outings should be easy, and the riverboats offer a rare “one size fits all” destination. Whether you are wrangling energetic kids, planning a long-overdue catch-up with friends, or organizing a family reunion, the atmosphere adapts to you. There is plenty of space to roam, music to set the mood, and a variety of snacks to keep everyone happy. It is a communal experience where history buffs can dive into the narration while others simply enjoy the relaxation of being on the water.

    Capture perspective from every angle

The Gateway Arch is an architectural marvel from any angle but seeing it from the center of the Mississippi River is a different experience entirely. As the spring sun hits the stainless steel, the reflections off the water create a photographer’s dream. From the deck, you get an unobstructed view of the historic Eads Bridge and the evolving St. Louis riverfront. It is the perfect time of year to capture those iconic shots before the summer haze sets in.

    Join the generations who’ve cruised

For decades, locals have looked at the riverboats as a landmark for their own personal histories. From first dates and prom nights to golden anniversaries, these boats have served as the backdrop for generations of St. Louis stories. There is a sense of continuity in knowing that while the skyline evolves, the experience of a river cruise remains a timeless staple of life in our city.

Soak up the sun and refresh your spirit

After a long, indoor-focused winter, we all need a mental reset. There is something inherently calming about “river vibes” the sound of the water, the open sky, and the slow pace of the boat. It is an invitation to put down your phone, soak in the sun, and share a laugh over a drink. It’s the transition we all need to move into a more active, outdoor-oriented mindset for the months ahead.

Shore-ly you can’t pick just one

The Riverboats at the Gateway Arch offer a truly unique St. Louis experience (the only cruises on the Mississippi River in St. Louis). We offer a variety of ways to get out on the water, ensuring every visit feels unique:

    • St. Louis Riverfront Cruise: Our daily sightseeing staple. For those who want a deeper dive, join us on the first Wednesday of the month for the Ag Coast of America cruise, highlighting the river’s role in global freight. On select Thursdays, the MO History Takeover Cruise features Amanda Clark from the Missouri Historical Society for a fascinating, conversational look at our past.
    • Skyline Dinner Cruise: Elevate your evening with a chef-inspired menu and the glowing lights of the city as your backdrop.
    • Sunday Brunch Cruise: This is the only brunch experience on the Mississippi in St. Louis. It is a two-hour escape featuring great food and even better views.
    • Blues Cruise: St. Louis and the Blues are inseparable. This cruise celebrates that deep-rooted musical heritage, connecting the rhythm of the music to the flow of the river.

The river is calling. We look forward to seeing you on board.

Get ready to raise a glass because National Tequila Day is just around the corner on July 24! And as we like to say, take life with a grain of salt, a lime, and a margarita in hand, because this day deserves a proper cheers! While the Riverboats at the Gateway Arch are celebrating in style with a dockside happy hour full of bold flavors, bright cocktails, and unbeatable riverfront vibes, we’re also sharing a little piece of the riverboat magic for you to enjoy at home.

During our special dockside happy hour on Thursday, July 24, 2025, our bar will be shaking up a limited-time lineup of tequila-forward favorites, including a Prickly Pear Margarita (a delicious twist on the classic with a sweet and slightly tangy flavor and an iconic bright pink color that practically begs for a photo op!). We’ll also be serving our classic Mississippi River Sunrise and a citrusy Cuervo Sparkling Paloma.

But for those of you who want to get a head start on the festivities, we’re giving you the inside scoop on how to craft two of our refreshing tequila concoctions right in your own kitchen!

Mix Up a Mississippi River Sunrise

This vibrant drink is like a summer sunset over the water – beautiful and refreshing.

    What you’ll need:

    • Hornitos Tequila
    • Peach Schnapps
    • Orange Juice
    • Grenadine

    How to make it:

    1. Fill a glass with ice.
    1. Add 1.5 oz Hornitos Tequila.
    1. Pour in 0.5 oz Peach Schnapps.
    1. Top with 4 oz Orange Juice.
    1. Slowly drizzle 0.5 oz Grenadine into the glass. It will sink and create that beautiful “sunrise” effect.
    1. Garnish with an orange slice and a cherry and enjoy the view!

    Craft a Cuervo Sparkling Paloma

Light, citrusy, and bubbly – the Paloma is a true crowd-pleaser and a fantastic alternative to a traditional margarita.

    What you’ll need:

    • Tequila (we use Cuervo at the dockside bar!)
    • Grapefruit Juice
    • Lime Juice
    • Grenadine
    • Sparkling water or club soda (optional, for extra fizz!)

    How to make it:

    1. Fill a glass with ice.
    1. Combine 2 oz Tequila, 3 oz Grapefruit Juice, and 0.5 oz Lime Juice in the glass.
    1. Add a splash (about 0.25 oz) of Grenadine for a hint of color and sweetness.
    1. Stir gently.
    1. Optional: Top with a splash of sparkling water or club soda for a little effervescence.
    1. Garnish with a lime wedge or grapefruit slice. Cheers to that!

While these recipes will get your home celebration off to a great start, there’s nothing quite like toasting summer from the breezy dockside bar with unbeatable views of the Gateway Arch. So, after you’ve mastered these at home, come down and join us on National Tequila Day, Thursday, July 24, 2025 for our special dockside happy hour and experience the full “fiesta and float” vibe with our exclusive Prickly Pear Margarita!

As the St. Louis summer temperatures begin to climb, finding refreshing ways to beat the heat and enjoy the city becomes a top priority. While Gateway Arch National Park is famous for its iconic outdoor views and sprawling grounds, it’s also packed with incredibly cool experiences (both literally and figuratively!) to enjoy on those sweltering summer days. Don’t let the heat keep you from exploring one of America’s most significant national parks. Dive into these air-conditioned adventures and make the most of your visit.

    The Gateway Arch

The magnificent Gateway Arch stands as a symbol of westward expansion and a testament to modern architecture. But this world-famous structure is far more than just a photo opportunity. When the temperatures outside are soaring, step inside for an incredibly unique and climate-controlled journey. Board the specially designed tram and ascend 630 feet to the very top. From the observation deck, you’ll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the entire St. Louis area, including the mighty Mississippi River and downtown skyline. The entire experience, from the underground entry area to the observation deck high above, is completely indoors and refreshingly cool, offering a perfect escape from the midday sun.

    Museum Under the Gateway Arch

Located beneath the Arch itself, the Museum under the Gateway Arch offers an immersive dive into centuries of history, all within a state-of-the-art, fully air-conditioned environment. This free museum features six interactive galleries that expertly explore the story of America’s westward expansion, delve into fascinating Native American cultures, and recount the pivotal moments in the founding of St. Louis. It’s the ideal place to spend a hot afternoon, learning and exploring at your own pace.

The Riverboats at the Gateway Arch

For a unique perspective and a gentle breeze, head to the Riverboats at the Gateway Arch. Step aboard the Tom Sawyer, a classic paddlewheel-style riverboat that offers daily cruises along the Mississippi River. While enjoying the open air on the upper deck, you’ll feel a refreshing breeze and take in unparalleled panoramic views of the city skyline and, of course, the Gateway Arch itself. But if the sun gets a little too intense, simply head to the lower, enclosed deck. Here, you’ll find comfortable air-conditioning, a selection of cold drinks, and snacks available for purchase. Enjoy the narrated cruise from the comfort of the cool cabin, learning about St. Louis’ rich riverfront legacy and its vital role in American history.

    The Old Courthouse

Just a short walk from the Gateway Arch visitor center, this historic landmark is where the pivotal Dred and Harriet Scott case was first argued. Recently reopened to the public after extensive renovations, the building now boasts a significant upgrade: a new air-conditioning system! Visitors can now explore updated exhibits on civil rights history and our judicial system in a cool, quiet, and reflective environment. It’s a powerful and comfortable way to connect with a crucial part of the nation’s past.
